Our Call to Action

Eliminating the use of the word “dementia/demented” in favor of non-stigmatized language requires a thoughtful and deliberate approach.

Supportive organizations commit to the following:

  1. Developing and implementing language guidelines that recommend alternative terms to "dementia/demented,” such as “cognitive impairment,” “memory loss,” “neurocognitive disorder,” or “related diseases” in conjunction with Alzheimer’s disease. Ensuring that these guidelines are integrated into all relevant policies, documents, and communication channels and alternatives are used as often as possible.

  2. Creating a plan to identify and replace instances of the word “dementia/demented” in existing materials and content wherever possible.

  3. Providing regular reminders on the importance of non-stigmatizing language and how to use alternative terms effectively, with leadership modeling the use of preferred terms.

  4. Engaging with the broader community, within your organizational network, to promote understanding and support for the change in terminology.
